Inlaid amboyna jewellery box with a couple of unusual features in very fine condition. For the most part 19th century small amboyna boxes tended to feature tulip wood and/or Boulle style inlays to the top. This particular example features applied brass cartouche with scroll beneath and a shield style escutcheon with dome top stud fixings. However it is the unusual combination of the thin strip of abalone shell and faux tortoiseshell that sets this item apart from the norm, the shell providing a splash of colour not usually associated with boxes of the style. All inlays, ebony edging and veneer are in excellent condition and appear to be original as does all of the brassware throughout. The hinges and lock are in A1 condition and a replacement working key is supplied. The lid closes perfectly square and true. The box interior features the original lining throughout and is in remarkable condition. A fine looking box and always interesting to come across something a little different.
